Protection and enhancement of rural architecture and landscape
The estate’s historic road network
The internal rural road network of the Pietraperciata estate is an integral part of the traditional agricultural system. The routes allowed connections between the different cultivated areas and access to the terraces, olive groves and citrus orchards. Over time, the gradual abandonment of some crops and farming practices in the less profitable areas has led to reduced routine maintenance, with the resulting deterioration of the internal paths.
The restoration work
The PNRR project provided for the upgrading of a significant, though not total, portion of the internal rural road network, through works that respect the historical and landscape features of the area. The interventions improved safety and usability of the routes, making the lane more resistant to torrential rain. The local stone paving and flagstone surface promote surface water runoff without dragging large amounts of soil, reducing erosion. Specific drainage channels, regularly placed along the route, also help slow the flow and direct water toward the stream downstream.
Depending on the slope of the routes, different construction techniques were adopted, tailored to the site’s morphological conditions, to ensure stability, durability, and proper water management.
Use of the route
The restored rural road network is now an integral part of the PNRR project visitor route and offers an overall reading of the agricultural landscape and its transformations over time.
Information panels and digital content accessible via QR code accompany the visitor along the route, providing historical and contextual information on the places crossed.
